So, under pressure from my friends and advice of my fiction teacher, I am making a professional LJ... semi-professional LJ... ranting-journal under the guise of formality. By the way, armageddon_girl is correct, you are the coolest person on earth </b></a>
I have been talking much about you and how much ass you and your class kicked (and you know it's genuine since I already have my grade.)
That said, perhaps I should give a general overview of my current activiities. Yes.
Trying to finish up with corrections to "Autumn and Turntables," but I've added about three thousand more words to the original and it's a little hard to tell if it flows right. I sent copies to a few of my friends and I'm hoping to hear back soon. Before the end of break I'd like to send it to Strange Horizons and wait patiently for a rejection e-mail. From there I'll see about the "small and literary" journals and hold out a little hope. I really like how this story turned out, but I still have issues with the first page and the title because I don't think either are very good attention grabbers. I guess I'm just proud I made one of the central characters a rag doll.
Speaking of strange main characters, I finished a new
very rough draft of a story tentatively named "Showdown in the Parking Lot between Broadway and 5th St.
or Steve Irwin is Dead" (I'm borrowing - not very well - from Sherman Alexie's titling strategy). Mostly I was just really amused by writing a story about an immoral character who just becomes more immoral and somehow including Steve Irwin into the plot. Does anyone know how an Australian accent works? I think I need to work on that. Also, there is a song that my characters keep referencing and siniging the lyrics, but the only lyrics I write down are the title words (so, my question is: am I in danger of getting sued if I try to publish this?).
So, my goals for this month of break:
1.) Send out Autumn and Turntables
2.) finish "Steve Irwin is Dead"
3.) start fleshing out an idea for a novel (lets just see how that works out) or write another rough draft of a short story
4.) apply to John Hopkins University summer writing program
the last one sounds really intersting, actually. There is this national gifted and talented program they have for grade, middle and high school and they need TAs for it. They pay $2100 for six weeks, free room and board and you get to help teach little kids how to write. I
really want to get in this program. I'm becoming more serious about eventually going into teaching and this would be great experience. Besides, that would be so much fun to help out with the spec fic and playwriting classes they offer. The only thing that bothers me is that it occured to me if I do get this job I would be teaching kids who are a lot smarter and more talented than I am. (Shrugs) Sounds neat anyway.
Happy holidays.
